Is it safe to say that men generally don’t own as many pairs of shoes as women? It is hard to say these days. Our traditional views of men suggest that the typical man doesn’t have a closet full of shoes. Still, the modern world requires more than one pair. Are you a man? If so, how many pairs of shoes do you own?
Perhaps a more appropriate question is, how many pairs of shoes do you really need? That probably depends on a variety of factors including work, leisure activities, weather, and so forth. Below are some of the shoe types you might own.
Dress Shoes
With the exception of the perpetual beach bum – who might own nothing more than a pair of flip-flops – the typical man owns at least one pair of dress shoes. They are a necessity for occasions requiring a tie and jacket. Think weddings, funerals, holiday parties, and the like.
Professional men are known to own several pairs of dress shoes for work purposes. They have certain shoes for daily work and others for special circumstances. They are also the types of men who protect their dress shoes with waterproof shoe covers, like those from GC Tech.
Casual Shoes
The next step down from dress shoes are casual shoes. Think loafers and deck shoes here. Some men may not own casual shoes unless they need them for work. They have dress shoes or boots for the 9-to-5 and sneakers for everything else.
The flip side is those men who own at least one pair of casual shoes for wearing outside the house. They are the go-to shoes when a man is neither working nor playing. They are for going to the movie theater, joining friends for a drink, or getting together with extended family members for a birthday party.
Sneakers
Almost every man who exercises owns a pair of sneakers. They are the only shoes that will do when you play pickup basketball with the guys. They are the shoes you need for running, cycling, or working out at the weight room. The best thing about sneakers is that they have become acceptable as casual footwear. You can wear them with jeans and a sport coat and not miss a beat.
Work Boots
Dress shoes, casual shoes and sneakers are fairly common for most men. Work boots, not so much. A good pair of boots is made of a tough material, like leather. Work boots often have steel toes as well. They are a staple for manual laborers in construction, manufacturing, and so forth.
You know you have a good pair of work boots when you don’t need shoe covers to protect them against the elements. A good pair of work boots can handle the weather on their own.
Sandals or Flip-Flops
These days, a lot of men own either sandals or flip-flops as well. They are the summer shoes of choice in northern environments that still require heavier shoes most of the year. Down south, some men wear their sandals or flip-flops whenever they aren’t working. If they are really lucky, they can wear them for work too!
It would appear as though the typical man could get away with a maximum of five pairs of shoes. Whether or not that’s realistic depends on the man. How about you? How many pairs of shoes does your normal life demand? Go ahead and admit it. The rest of us won’t bat an eye if you have a closet full of shoes. If that’s your thing, that’s your thing.
