Every year, the Spring & Fall fashion seasons introduce a long list of trends. If you are someone who is not bothered by what’s hyped on the runways, probably you like minimalistic style. Sometimes, even the best runway trends are minimal and come in small capsules. So, when it comes to building a minimalistic wardrobe, there are certain essentials you need to have. Think of these as the must-haves in your closet. You may have your own taste & preferences in colors, designs and shades, but we promise that this list is going to be just enough!
T-shirts
You cannot think of minimal clothing for men without considering tees and t-shirts. From the standard round neck, to the Chinese collar and V-neck, there are endless styles to choose from. T-shirts often end up being the most used things in our closet. It’s easy to team these with almost anything – a casual pair of denims, under the blazer, or even with a pair of Bermuda pants on the beach. Check for brands like Jasper Holland that have a cool collection of T-shirts inspired by modern trends.
Shorts
You may love your boxers, but shorts are a must to have in your closet, especially if you are a man who loves to head out in the summers, or prefer the beach. There are all kinds of short designs and colors, but go for a couple of neutrals, and include at least one peach/pastel shade in your collection. Shorts can be teamed with casual vests, or simple T-shirts, and all you need to accessorize is a funky watch. We promise that this is something you are going to repeat time and again.
Sweatshirts
You don’t need many sweatshirts or a minimalistic closet, but go for a couple at the least. One should be your standard blue or navy sweatshirt from a known brand, and other one can be athletic, funky, and cool – depending on how you like your casual days to be. Sweatshirts are versatile in the truest sense, just like T-shirts, so you can actually wear them with your chinos, a pair of shorts, or even with casual joggers for a change.
Denims
Jeans are among the basic closet must-haves. The best part about these pants is the material. You can wear denims in the roughest of ways and expect the same kind of performance for years. If you are just choosing a couple, you should definitely have at least one washed option and other in classic blue. Wear your denims with a nice t-shirt for a casual date night, or reserve one for workwear Fridays.
A tailored tuxedo
You never know when you have to attend that one big event, where you are expected to dress up like a true gentle. Just like your denims and t-shirts, think of tuxedos as an investment for years to come, unless you change shape frequently. The classic black tuxedo can hardly go wrong and is different from that of a suit, which doesn’t have lapels. Make sure to go for a tailored one that’s made to fit your every cut.

Formal shirts and pants
For work, you definitely need at least three formal shirts. Go for the classic stripe or a solid color like blue, lavender, or pink, which are safe picks. You can team these with pants of your choice, but formal pants are an obvious choice. Formal pants work best in colors like black and navy blue, but you can go for the lighter grays too.
Polo t-shirts
Somewhere between the casual t-shirts and formal shirts is the standard polo t-shirt that looks absolutely wonderful on denims. You can go for neutral shades, or pick one of the summer colors – that’s your call. The fit of a polo tee has to be perfect around the arms, and we strongly recommend that you choose the right size.
Does brand matter?
Yes, it does. When you are building a minimal closet, you want the things in your collection to stand out, and brands and labels are not just about high prices. It has more to do with quality, and comfort, and these are things you wouldn’t want to compromise with. There are just too many brands to choose from, but for the basics, rely on names that you can trust. Some manufacturers have an eye for detail, and even some of their basic t-shirts look and feel comfortable.
Go ahead, make a quick shopping list, and start picking the best ones you like.
